County Executive Dooley Supports Free Gas & Recreational Use of County Cars for His Dept. Heads

May 18th, 2010 by mopns · No Comments

Investigative reporter Elliot Davis asks St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley why county department heads receive the perk of a free new car and free gas in a down economy. Mr. Dooley’s response in effect was, “it’s been done like this for thirty years, it’s not my fault.” Not only does he say it once, but he says it at least five times in the piece. It seems ironic, that right after supporting an initiative in February asking the taxpayers to pay higher taxes for public transit, Mr. Dooley seems to support his cronies department heads receiving free gas to tool around town in their off time. We understand that your administration didn’t initiate the practice, but in these difficult times with tough budget choices, this should have been one of the first perks to go. Making excuses is not leadership.

This is another example of why after 20 years, the Buzz Westfall/Charlie Dooley era should come to an end in November. The cronyism, backroom deals – and the perks for a lucky few staff members – is what you’d expect to occur when administration get’s complacent and has been in power for too long. We are told that Mr. Dooley is an affable man who exudes charisma and charm, but affability does not necessarily translate into leadership capabilities; people are clamoring for real change and reform this election cycle. They’re sick and tired of politicians thinking they can live by another set of rules

If Mr. Elliot follows up on this story, and he still receives the parrot like line Mr. Dooley gave him last time, he should ask Mr. Dooley if it has been a thirty year practice to have county employees give exactly one percent of their salary to their boss’s re-election effort?

Another lying Democrat who has the “it doesn’t apply to me” attitude.
