Do You think Illegal Immigrant When You Hear the Word Hispanic?

Apparently the president of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan St. Louis thinks “most” of us do.

“To most, “Hispanic” has become nearly synonymous with “illegal immigrant.” Many of us have been conditioned to believe that Hispanics take American jobs, depress wages by accepting low pay and overwhelm our educational system. Hispanics are portrayed as poor, uneducated and dependent on public assistance. These are some of the same false charges that were leveled against Chinese laborers, Japanese-Americans, the Irish, Italians, Germans and others who came to this country as immigrants. You would think we would learn from our history.” Read more…

Only a liberal, “conditioned” with a victim mentality, would make these points with a straight face. “Most” Mr. Riopedre??? You not only insult non Hispanics with your broad brush, but your own people as well. Not unlike most open border advocates when they talk about previous immigrant groups, Riopedre conveniently forgets to mention that the Chinese, Japanese, Irish, Italians, Germans and others who came to this country came  here LEGALLY.

Personally, when I think of the word Hispanic, I think of all the great baseball players and boxers that have entertained us for so many years. I think of Judges Sonia Sotomayor and Miguel Estrada – the latter an Honduran LEGAL immigrant who graduated magna cum laude from Columbia University and Harvard law School – who was filibustered by Senate Democrats because he was the “wrong type of Latino” due to his conservatism.

“In 2007, there were 595 hate crimes perpetrated against Hispanics, a 40 percent increase from 2003, according to the FBI’s most recent statistics. I have little doubt that when the newest numbers come out that the trend will persist.

If you want to go there Mr. Riopedre, what about all the crimes that are committed by Hispanic illegal aliens against legal citizens? You can’t open the newspapers in this country without reading a story of an illegal immigrant committing a crime against a citizen. From drunk driving accidents, to kidnappings, to murders, the list just goes on and on!  Mr. Riopedre, you do your people a monumental disservice by painting them as victims. “Most” of us don’t care where you come from or your ethnicity, all we want is for you to assimilate into the culture (not give up your culture) and enter our country legally and become a citizen the right way.

Most of us know that an illegal immigrant does not mean Hispanic. I believe most of us know that America tends to welcome most illegals no matter what home country they be from.
