We heard over the weekend a radio spot cut by Democrat state Rep. Maria Chappelle-Nadal for Republican attorney general candidate Mike Gibbons. In this year of the Democrat, Chappelle seems to be the only Democrat leader who hasn’t been snowed by Chris Koster’s monumental con job.

Other elected African American leaders like the El-Amin’s and Congressman Lacy Clay have swallowed hook line and sinker the notion that Koster – who voted for the Medicaid cuts and for Voter ID, is now a died in the wool, man of the working class Democrat! Although we disagee with the representative’s political philosophy, it’s refreshing to see a politician sticking with her convictions regardless of potential threats and pressure from colleagues and powerful politicians.

State Rep. Maria Chappelle-Nadal (D-University City) is one of the more liberal members of the Missouri Legislature, but that isn’t stopping her from throwing her support behind the Republican candidate for Attorney General — in fact, it may be the reason.

The Democratic candidate for A.G. was, until just this year, a Republican. State Sen. Chris Koster joined the Democratic Party just weeks before announcing his candidacy. His critics charged Koster with opportunism, arguing that he saw the writing on the wall that this was going to be a bad year for Republicans. And at the time, it was also believed that U.S. Attorney Catherine Hanaway, former Republican Speaker of the House, might jump in the race, making her the clear front runner for the GOP nomination.

In the end, Hanaway didn’t run (and neither did Gov. Matt Blunt for re-election) and Koster won the Democratic nomination by just 852 votes, three-tenths of one percent.

Nadal says she doesn’t care what party Koster is claiming nowadays, she’s not supporting him. Read more…
