Jay Says He’s No Kay

June 4th, 2008 by jjjameson · No Comments

After seeing Kay Barnes’ poll numbers plummet after Sam Graves’ first “San Francisco values” ad, presumptive Democrat governor nominee Jay Nixon is watching his backside (no pun intended) so to speak, by shoring up his “conservative” credentials with rural Democrats. From the Vital Voice website – a gay and lesbian newspaper in St. Louis.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jay Nixon has joined with Republican officials in ten other states to ask that the California Supreme Court delay its enforcement of its recent ruling on same-sex marriage. The formal reasoning behind their request is that the court should wait until voters have had their say on the recently added ballot proposal that defines marriage as being between a man and a woman.

There was much speculation during the primary season that Jay was caught between a rock and a hard place in terms of his choice for President. Nixon, who has had his share of problems with the African American community over the years, did not want to risk alienating these voters – like he did in 1998 – by supporting Clinton. On the other hand, with Obama’s “guns, religion and bitterness” comments, he couldn’t risk alienating rural Democrats either. Being the career politician that he is, Nixon simply waited till one of the candidates cinched the nomination before he committed.

Who would have ever thought that Nixon, Hulshof and Steelman, would all be competing with each other to be the most conservative.
