 Missouri Political News Service would like to extend our warmest and most heartfelt congratulations to Monsanto public affairs manager (no pun intended) and Missouri political blogger John Combest. This is the second child born to Combest – this year. His wife of nearly ten years Monica gave birth to their first child  John Lee Combest earlier this year and his girlfriend/mistress gave birth to little Charlotte last night. As can be expected when you find out that your husband has impregnated another woman, (especially while you’re pregnant yourself) Mrs. Combest has filed for divorce with a first hearing scheduled for August.

We know that facts and science don’t matter when you’re on a crusade for notoriety and publicity while the sands run out of the hourglass of your political career. In yet another report from the Environmental Protection, the report states once again there is no Manhattan Project nuclear waste contaminating homes around the Westlake landfill in Bridgeton, Missouri, a suburb in St. Louis county.

The Environmental Protection Agency today released further information that the area outside West Lake Landfill does not possess radioactive waste, another in a series of scientific reports calling into question the credibility of some activists uproar. The latest study affirms House Republicans decision not to spend $1,000,000 in taxpayer money to buyout homes in the area studied. The residential sampling was conducted in the Bridgeton area the week of December 26, 2016. Due to the results, CERCLA (also known as Superfund) action is not warranted.

This is not the first time the EPA has found scientific results that fail to match claims in Spanish Village and Bridgeton. After hearing the concerns and a lawsuit, the EPA chose to pursue the sampling in the area. “EPA acted quickly in conjunction with the state of Missouri, the Corps of Engineers, and the CDC, once we learned of the allegation of potential contamination inside a residence in Spanish Village,” Acting EPA Region 7 Administrator Edward H. Chu said. “We collected and analyzed over 140 samples, and our evaluation of the data shows no Manhattan Project waste was found in the homes sampled in Spanish Village.” Read more….

Senator Chappelle Nadal and the professional protesters at the Westlake landfill have purposely tried to confuse the public by equating the Westlake contamination and the Coldwater Creek contamination as originating from the source.

While often easy to conflate there are vast differences between the West Lake landfill and the Coldwater Creek situations and the activists involved. The longstanding community activism in Spanish Lake continues to frustrate those in Coldwater Creek, an area with scientific reports of radiation and health problems, who believe some “activists” and trial lawyers are piggybacking off of their problems. Many of these were outlined in Rep. Justin Hill’s speech on the floor of the House the last day of session which included discussing his wife’s battle with cancer.

“This is something [Coldwater Creek residents] consistently battle [West Lake Landfill activists] on,” Angela Helbling of Coldwater Creek said on Facebook. “The other thing I find alarming is that other (like Maria [Chappelle-Nadal]) are trying to paint the picture that our collective illnesses at Coldwater Creek, as outlined by our informational health survey; are due exposure to landfill emissions/landfill fire; which is not true. I buried my mom 21 years ago. Long before the fire. She is being used (just like everyone else who is represented in our health survey) to push political agendas and buyouts that only benefit those responsible for contamination at Coldwater Creek in the first place.

SB22, the controversial bill sponsored by controversial Senator Maria Chappelle Nada died last Friday at the end of the legislative session. Her bill would have spent nearly $13 million dollars to buy out homes near the contaminated Westlake landfill. Although she threatened to interrupt Senate business in retaliation for her bill’s defeat, her short filibuster was ended procedurally. Not one to go quiet in the night, the Senator lobbed this hand grenade into the twitter-verse to show her disappointment,

On April 4th, Westlake Professional Protesters and Earth Defense Coalition co-founders Alex Cohen and Amber Mae Duvall, led a protest at Senator Claire McCaskill’s office in St. Louis. They flooded into her office with red paint on their hands to protest the Westlake Landfill. Once again we have so called ‘progressives’ who are supposed to be known for tolerance exhibiting behavior which is the exact opposite of tolerance.

There seems to be genuine interest from all parties for a solution to this problem. Unfortunately, the extreme rhetoric of Senator Chappelle Nadal and her minions the professional protesters are making that solution harder and harder to find.

What do all three of these have in common you ask? The Westlake Landfill in St. Louis County that has low levels of World War II nuclear waste that was illegally dumped there decades ago before the current owner owned the property.State senator Maria Chappelle Nadal who is leading the nearly $13 million buyout offer has threatened to bring the senate to a “grinding halt” if the House doesnt take up her bill in the two days left in the legislative session.

Although Sen. Chappele Nadal is a self described progressive and represents a far left wing progressive district, there is some bi-partisan support in the House for her buyout bill:

State Rep. Justin Hill (R-Lake St. Louis) says he wants people to make some noise so the federal government will pay attentionWe have families in my district who have grown up in the Coldwater Creek watershed, including my wife’s own family,” says Hill. “This has personally affected my family. Um, 100% of my wife’s family has either cancer or auto-immune diseases.”

As we reported earlier in the week, although Chappelle Nadal’s bill has some bi-partisan support, the actions of her allies like professional protesters Earth Defense Coalition has soured many legislators on supporting her bill.

One St. Louis area legislator told us, “Look I’m sensitive to the concerns of these homeowners, I once lived near a contaminated sight myself but these outside groups disrupting a private business for publicity doesn’t sit well with me quite frankly. They need to go home and let the adults in the room solve this pressing problem.”

Who or what exactly is the Earth Defense Coalition? How are they funded since the founders don’t seem to be gainfully employed but still travel the country for weeks and months at a time protesting at various sites? The activists who targeting Westlake Landfill are part of a broader coalition of regional professional protesters who target a wide variety of facilities. The professional protesters are mostly young (under 30) radical communists, socialists, anarchists, and leftists who target facilities that run afoul of leftist ideology.

They have targeted facilities and offices in eight states on issues as varied as the Democratic Party nominee, oil and natural gas policy, foreign policy, and nuclear waste treatment. The Earth Defense Coalition shares goals, some members, and resources with several radical leftist and environmental organizations across the country. These groups are Soul Much Water, Soulfire Caravan, Mississippi Stand, Progressive Youth Organization- STL, Just Moms STL, and Arkansas Rising among others.
