Tommy Sowers – A Reluctant Missourian

March 16th, 2010 by mopns · No Comments

“I wasn’t sure why I was laughing, an odd situation to find myself in that I’m a fairly serious guy. But moments after meeting the Dalai Lama, as he was blessing me by placing a white silk ceremonial scarf, or kata, around my neck, he started giggling. So did I”– Congressional candidate Tommy Sowers

After not living here for more than 10 years, Tommy Sowers moved to Missouri this past summer and announced his intention to run for Congress. Before moving, he sold his luxury SUV in New York and bought a pickup truck. I guess he thought the truck would play better in Southern Missouri than an expensive Volvo.

Then, instead of using his time to ask for support from the voters he wants to elect him, Sowers spent time flying to New York to raise money from his Wall Street banker friends. Sowers also received Nancy Pelosi’s blessing when the Take the Hill PAC donated to his campaign. Pelosi is not the only donor Sowers has who is out of touch with Missouri. In fact, nearly 80% of Sowers’ donations come from OUTSIDE of Missouri.

Sowers’ east coast roots run deep. Sowers posted on his campaign facebook page that he is cheering on Duke in the NCAA Tournament. Jo Ann Emerson posted earlier in the day that she is cheering on Mizzou.

Guess Sowers is still having trouble identifying with Missouri.

With 2010 first quarter financial reports due out in just a month, it will be interesting to see if Sowers will continue his trend of bringing outside liberal dollars into Missouri.
