Terrorists, Tax Dollars, and KSM

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
– The Second Coming, W.B. Yeats

By Ed Martin

The world is going crazy. We are letting terrorists who attacked America and killed thousands DEMAND trials and we give it to them. Why? Because we want to show the world how decent we are. I wonder if this is how the Romans dealt with the barbarians just before the end ….

The old rule in public relations is “drop the bad news on Friday to bury it over the weekend.” And so it was – yet again – that the Obama administration drops the news that the September 11, 2001 mastermind murderer Khalid Shaikh Mohammed has just been given new and special rights to a trial in – of all places – New York. He will get a trial in federal court with all the pomp and circumstance that a celebrity trial can afford. What a nightmare.

There are over 3000 reasons why this should not happen. There are also these three: 1) the cost to taxpayers is insulting during this recession – why should taxpayers who are already strapped be forced to pay for the privilege that Obama is giving KSM and his pals?; 2) New York and its citizens are now endangered as the terrorists would like nothing more than to disrupt NY life during the trial – to show they can still hit us; 3) the trials will – literally – take years and, I bet, a decade to complete – and our nation will be forced to live with this torture for all that time.

This could all be stopped by Congress. They could – and should – pass a law saying that these terrorist murderers should be tried in military tribunals. Senator McCaskill, who claims to be a close pal of Obama, and Congressman Carnahan, one of the earliest backers of Obama, should file the bill to make this law happen as soon as possible.

I confess that 9-11 is very personal to me. A friend of mine, John Farrell, was murdered that day. John was a man of immense energy and joy (and a fine athlete and beer drinker) and his death haunts me. I may not always be rational or even balanced in my thoughts concerning the cowards that attacked us that day, but here is what I believe: there is no punishment terrible enough for these murderers. None.

The idea of giving KSM and others extra protection, extra rights, or any other consideration makes my head swim. More than anything, these murderers will cost us millions of dollars – for security, for the legal proceedings, and for the whole effort. This is not worth it. They are not worth it.

And, if we cannot hold our own centers enough to recognize this, then we are more lost than I ever dreamed.

    Need to make justice quick and easy, I say put all of em in a building scheduled for demolition. Put them on the second floor and implode the building, the taller the building the better.
