Carnahan Exploits Recent Earthquakes for Photo Op

From The Hill (6/12/07)

Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-Mo.) and his wife, Debra, do not believe in having the traditional sex talk with their two teenage sons. Instead, they argue, it’s an ongoing conversation.

Debra, a municipal judge who sits on the national board of Planned Parenthood, got right to the point with the couple’s 17-year-old. One day she brought him a keychain with a condom on it. He laughed.

“I don’t think he uses it,” Debra says.

When the best media coverage you can achieve is discussing your son’s sex life in a national newspaper, we guess you automatically jump at an opportunity – no matter how opportunistic it looks – to show your constituents in St. Louis that you are doing more than watching night time space shuttle launches and sponsoring bills to rename post offices in Kansas City.

Congressman Carnahan recently toured St. Louis University’s Earthquake Center. As we all know, the St. Louis region was recently shaken by a 5.2 magnitude earthquake, with several aftershock occurring afterwards.

From the SLU website:

“With members of the local media in tow, Congressman Russ Carnahan (MO-3) toured the Saint Louis University Earthquake Center May 2. He met with SLU researchers to discuss the recent seismic activity that rocked the Midwest”

And what thought provoking and brilliant quotes did Carnahan leave with the reporters and faculty? “I’m impressed with the work you are doing here” and “I’m also interested in working with you to make sure we capture the best and brightest of the next generation of scientists.”

Keep up the good work Russ!
