MONARK SPRINGS – About 150 gathered at Monark Springs Park Saturday afternoon to hear from several Democratic candidates seeking state office in 2008.
Many came to hear Robin Carnahan, who is seeking re-election to her position as Missouri Secretary of State. Others speaking at the event included Mark Powell, the current mayor of Arnold, Mo., who is seeking election as state treasurer, and Jon Hagler, who attended on behalf of Attorney General Jay Nixon, who is seeking the governor’s position currently held by Matt Blunt.
Much of the talk Saturday focused on family values such as health care and education.
Carnahan, the daughter of former Gov. Mel Carnahan and former U.S. Sen. Jean Carnahan, told about growing up in rural Rolla, Mo.
“We went to church both on Sundays and Wednesdays,” she said. “One of the values I grew up with was to treat people as you want to be treated. I learned by lifting up each other, we lift up the whole community.”
Carnahan asked the crowd if they thought this was a Democratic or a Republican value, with one member shouting out “It’s a human value!” Read more…
