I spent this past Saturday and Sunday morning at the Presidential endorsing convention of the National Federation of Republican Assemblies.
My own estimate of the crowd is about 600-700 delegates from around the country.
I was fortunate to get to meet and speak with some of the leading personalities attending the event. Among them were former Majority Leader, Congressman Tom Delay (a very gracious person), the Secretary of the California Republican Assembly, Gwen Dyrud, John Putnam, State Director of the Missouri Fair Tax organization, Janet Renner, Founder of the St. Louis Chapter of the Minuteman Project, Inc., a staff member from Rod Jetton’s office (who was very enthusiastic in his support for Mitt Romney), three staffers from the conservative website VANGUARD.ORG, which I understand has been around for about a year and is currently under construction and several others whose names I was not able to get. I’m curious, and I think this is more of a process question than a substantive one. How does this newsletter determine which little political chunks will be published? I’m provoked to this question by this particular example. Under a headline telling us how well Romney did, we have an article that, if read to the end, shows that Romney ran second to non-candidate Fred Thompson, 43-20. Now since this writer is connected with Romney’s campaign website, he certainly has every reason to spin that in his candidate’s favor, and more power to him. But publishing what amounts to a campaign press release doesn’t really broaden our informational universe much.
Incidentally, however, the story that has not been told here is that because Governor Blunt is backing Romney and because he now has complete control of the Missouri Republican Party (as incumbent governors usually do), it would be reasonable to anticipate that the party organization and the Romney organization may not be readily distinguishable within the next few months. Say what you want, but the MRP is a well-organized, well-run, competent political organization. If it is available to the Romney campaign, as I suspect, that amounts to a huge organization leg up for Mitt in Missouri.

Clarification for Paul:
John Cronin, the author of the above article, is a contributor to electromneyin2008.com which is an UNOFFICIAL website in support of Mitt Romney. His writings are in no way an official campaign press release, but the writings of a grassroots activist. It is true that he could choose to spin the article to favor Romney or put him in a better light, but honesty is the best policy.
