Hubbard Has Contoversial Leader Hosting Fundraiser

July 6th, 2007 by mopns · No Comments

The Hubbard for Senate Campaign is hitting the ground running after its successful kickoff and rally last week. Hubbard is holding a fundraiser next week that is described on the invitation to the left as a “Business Professionals Luncheon.”

The invite has pictures of St. Louis’ African American political and business notables, but what is more striking is the event’s host, controversial ex NAACP leader Ben Chavis – who is actually Ben Chavis-Muhammad now. We are a bit curious as to why fellow Muslim Hubbard didn’t reveal on the invitation Chavis-Muhammad’s full name. The former Christian minister converted to Islam after he was ousted from the NAACP.

Discounting the potential controversy of having Chavis-Muhammad host the event, it is a shrewd move by Hubbard that gives his campaign potential access to substantial money outside of Missouri.

Chavis-Muhammad and hip hop mogul Russell Simmons are co-chairs of the Hip Hop Summit Action Network. According to Chavis-Muhammad, the organization seeks to “encourage the empowerment of youth,” and to “facilitate the bridging of the generation gap between adults and young people and to bridge the cultural gap.”

The Hip Hop Action Summit’s board includes rappers Sean ‘PDiddy’ Combs, Jermaine Dupri, and St. Louis and Anheuser Busch’s own Johnny Furr Jr.- Vice President, Sales Development and Community Affairs.
