Another Charlie Dooley flip flop has become fodder for the Bill Corrigan campaign. On a Monday, he tells the St. Louis Post Dispatch that chances for a merger with St. Louis City “are better than before.” Then on Wednesday, after his trial balloon crashed and burned in the court of public opinion, Dooley now says that the Post Dispatch “misrepresented his statements.” In a recent blog post, Post-Dispatch reporter Paul Hampel explained what actually happened.
“An item was published last month on the paper’s Political Fix blog stating that Dooley had told Post-Dispatch editorial writers and reporters that he favored such a merger.
“After Dooley read the item, he told me that he did, indeed, support a merger between the city and county, but objected to his support being characterized in the item as ‘a priority’ of his. After some debate, I agreed to remove the word ‘priority’ from the story.
“An edited version of the story ran that left intact Dooley’s repeated statements in favor of the merger.
“After the edited story ran, Dooley’s spokeswoman, Katy Jamboretz, called and left a message on my answering machine that stated: ‘Thank you very much. I just read the new version of the story and it is 100 percent accurate.’
“That blog item drew almost 300 comments from readers, the vast majority of them criticizing Dooley for his support of a merger.)”
