Like most entrenched incumbents this year who are trailing their opponents, St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley seems to be avoiding debating his upstart challenger Bill Corrigan. According to a campaign press release, the campaign – including Bill Corrigan personally – has tried several times to get Mr. Dooley to agree to a series of debates:
“On August 3rd, I invited Charlie Dooley to participate in four face-to-face debates with various topics so voters would have several opportunities to judge the candidates on our vision, leadership and solutions for the future,” said Corrigan. “I even personally spoke with Mr. Dooley on September 7th at the Lemay Forum. I pulled out my Blackberry and offered to secure a date right at that moment. He refused to commit and suggested that we contact his people. What type of transparency and commitment to openness is that? It’s time for Mr. Dooley to stop hiding behind his handlers. The stakes are simply too high for him to be playing this game of hide and seek. What does Mr. Dooley have to hide? Why won’t he agree to any debates?”
According to the release, the Corrigan campaign contacted the League of Women’s Voters and Governor Holden of the Holden Public Policy Forum in early August as potential hosts for two of the debates, while working with local media outlets to host the two final debates. Corrigan offered to debate “anytime, anywhere, regarding any issue important to moving the County forward.” In mid-August, the Dooley campaign sent out a presser stating that they wanted a televised debate between the candidates. Yet today, Dooley still refuses to debate Corrigan in any manner, and the question is why?
