Quote of the Day: “Politico” Website Jumps on McCaskill for VP Bandwagon

From Politico:

By Terry Michael

Why is no one in the punditocracy talking about Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill as a possible running mate for Barack Obama?

A self-made, 54-year-old Catholic female professional (hmm — sounds like Hillary Rodham Clinton voters), she has won statewide office three times in the fiercely independent Show Me State, without the benefit of a spouse’s coattails.

You know, we’d expect a lot more from the writers at Politico. Their articles are cutting edge and usually offer very insightful commentary on the issues of the day, but the first sentence in Mr. Michael’s article sums up his naivete and ignorance of McCaskill and Missouri politics. As we said yesterday, Senator McCaskill – a freshman senator herself – would not add anything to the Democrat’s ticket. She can’t be considered a guarantee to carry Missouri for Obama since she’s not very popular with the “progressives” here. And self made? Give me a break. *She married a wealthy nursing home developer whose homes have been cited numerous times for serious violations. Politico needs to go back to the drawing board on this one!

From Wikipedia:

*In April 2002, McCaskill married St. Louis businessman Joseph Shepard. From her marriage to Shepard, she has four stepchildren. Shepard loaned $1.6 million to McCaskill’s 2004 gubernatorial campaign and also had business interests in the nursing home industry. Because as state auditor McCaskill was responsible for auditing the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, which regulates the state’s nursing home system, Shepard’s financial interests in the industry became an issue during the 2004 gubernatorial campaign.
