Fearmongering

The long-running National Public Radio broadcast of Garrison Keillor’s “Prairie Home Companion” radio show includes fictitious sponsors. One of those is the Fearmonger Shop, a place that sells all those things you might need if everything you are afraid of were to actually happen.

I think we all carry around varying amounts of fearmongering luggage in our heads. Usually this luggage is filled with blame and resentment as well…

The Feb. 7 shootings at the Kirkwood City Council Chambers have injected fear into the democratic process. Municipal meetings are the venue where government is most accessible. Those meetings provide the intersection where citizens can bring issues of things like streets and public safety to a room of persons responsible for those issues.

If fear is given the upper hand, those meetings become less accessible. There will be fewer willing volunteers to sit in those offices and hear the needs and concerns of the citizenry.

In a tragic event this week, a citizen who was visiting Starbucks in Crestwood jumped into action and pursued a young man who ran out the door with a tip jar. He was run over by the getaway car and later died. Read more…
