Tomorrow voters in the KCMO and Independence school districts will vote an initiative petition to transfer a part of the KCMO district that is located inside the Independence and Sugar Creek city limits over to the Independence districts. Residents of western Independence have been trying to do this for years, citing the KCMO districts troubles and its consequences for education and population loss in Independence.

The race is quite heated, and it looks like State Senator Victor Callahan has crossed the line. A flier urging KCMO residents to vote for the school transfer refers readers to the web site saveschools.org – which starts out saying “The Teachers of the Kansas City School District urge voters to vote YES.” This is a lie. The union representing KC teachers has officially opposed the transfer and is campaigning against it. Read more…
