Truman The Progressive?

May 20th, 2007 by mopns · No Comments

The Raytown Progressive blog is giving congratulatory shout outs to the Raytown Democratic Association. The organization was recently honored at the annual Truman Day’s Banquet with the Harry S Truman Democratic Organization Achievement Award. The post goes on to say that the RDA has “worked hard at every level to elect solid progressives to office.”

The Missouri Political News Service congratulates the RDA for receiving it’s award and the recognition from their party. It is ironic that an organization working hard to elect “solid progressives” would receive an award named after our 33rd President.

Normally, progressives are anti-war and dovish when it comes to America’s foreign policy. How does the “progressive” RDA receiving this award, square with a president who dropped not only one, but two nuclear bombs on Japan? Or a president who dispatched our armed forces to fight the Communists in Korea. The President didn’t seem very “progressive” when he said in his Truman Doctrine speech that “America will support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures”.

Symbolism over substance it. Awards just don’t mean what they used to.
