Emmanuel Cleaver: “Christian Fundamentalist?”

May 2nd, 2007 by mopns · No Comments

emmanuel cleaverThrough the years, politicians on both sides of the aisle have gained reputations for saying or writing whatever is expedient for the particular audience they are addressing. One infamous example is Vice President Al Gore claiming that he invented the internet and that the classic 70’s movie “Love Story” was based on him and his wife Tipper. Or, Bill Clinton’s famous whoppers of “I didn’t inhale” or “have sex with that woman.”

Writing for a liberal Christian website last year with the oxymoronic title of “Faithful Democrats”, Rep. Cleaver proudly labeled himself a “Christian Fundamentalist.”

“Because I accept the Holy Bible as the inspired and interminable Word of God, I consider myself to be a Christian fundamentalist. I accept, as an inseparable component of my faith, the omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience of God.”

While no one can accurately judge a man’s faith or his relationship with the Almighty, we can gain clues through his actions, words, and deeds. The Scriptures say “you shall know them by their fruits.” While in Congress, Cleaver has voted against parental notification when a minor daughter is taken across state lines to have an abortion. He believes partial birth abortion should remain legal, and Cleaver does not want underage pregnancies investigated for possible exploitation of a child.

In regards to stem cell research, Cleaver writes that “the institutions of scientific research must understand that there are moral mandates that cannot be infringed or ignored with impunity.”

According to the Alan Guttmacher Institute:

  • Black women are more than 3 times as likely as white women to have an abortion.
  • Minority women constitute only 13% of the female population (15-44) in the United States, but they underwent approximately 36% of the abortions.
  • On average, 1452 black babies are aborted every day in the United States. It has been estimated that since 1973, Black women have had about 10 million abortions.
  • Congressman Cleaver, the Missouri Political News Service asks: Is it acceptable for “moral madates to be infringed or ignored” when the abortionist lobby is an important Democratic Party interest group?
