El-Amin Speaks Out on Affirmative Action

May 9th, 2007 by mopns · No Comments

talibPub Def has a piece on Freshman legislator Talibdin El-Amin’s views on the recent announcement by a new organization to reform affirmative action in Missouri.

The Missouri Civil Rights Initiative held a press conference in Kansas City last month to announce their effort. El Amin says in the piece that the “numbers” prove discrimination still exists in our society. Here are a few excerpts from the article:

“We wanted to convey that this is not solely an African-American issue,” said El-Amin. “We’re trying not to be reactionary… trying to make sure people are being educated as to the deceptive language that is being used.”

El-Amin went on to say that he expects any bill attacking Affirmative Action to receive strong Democratic opposition, and that he has spoken to some Republican lawmakers that he has worked with in the past that will also “be inclined to support” Affirmative Action.”

Rep. El Amin, we believe it is pretty “reactionary” to hold press conferences and comment on an issue you are obviously ill informed about. The Missouri Civil Rights Initiative is not supporting a bill in the legislature, they are striving to put an important issue before the voters of Missouri – reforming affirmative action.
