Cleaver “Guinea Pig” Green Project Has Unintended Consequences

A “green” bus stop in San Francisco

As usual with most liberal good intentions, there’s always unintended consequences when they’re spending your money with reckless abandon. We told you last month about “Leave it to Cleaver’s” $200 million “stimulus” earmark for green jobs and green friendly bus stops. Well, here’s the unintended consequence of this boondoggle:

From University News (UMKC)

In April, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver announced the Kansas City, Mo. Parks and Recreation Department was awarded a $350,000 grant from the Economic Development Administration (EDA) to study and plan for a $50 to $70 million Climate Center.

Soon after Cleaver’s announcement, UMKC Chancellor Leo Morton and Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Gail Hackett released a statement reassuring the hundreds of university staff, faculty and students housed in the existing buildings.

“As the plan unfolds,” they said, “and the time frame becomes clearer as to when construction may impact UMKC and require relocation of the occupants located in these buildings, those located on the property will be included in discussion regarding a relocation plan and its implementation.”

“They are not necessarily groups you move quickly, easily or cheaply,” said Bob Simmons, assistant vice chancellor of Facilities Management, who will act as UMKC’s representative and sit on the planning board for the project.

“The key thing in all of this right now is that there are a lot of things we don’t know,” Simmons said. “And there are probably more things that we don’t know than we do know.” Read more…

Unbelievably, K.C. Star editorial columnist Yael T. Abouhalkah is not buying the merits of this project either:

“Think it’s too early to inject a little pessimism? Sorry, but the people who live in the neighborhoods affected by Green Impact Zone initiatives are used to being guinea pigs for purportedly wonderful programs to boost the urban core.” Read more…

I’m not a huge supporter of the low carb lifestyle as practiced by most Americans, although I do support
the avoidance of all processed carbohydrates as
recommended by the Atkins program and other low carb dieting systems such as the Hamptons Diet.
As a result of elevated levels of blood glucose for extended periods, two problems occur:
body cells become starved for energy (insufficient insulin to pour glucose inside the cells of the
diabetic), and, over time, the high glucose levels can damage the nerves, eyes, kidneys, heart and
blood vessels. And so you will be able to pick this program up for under $50, instead of the $100 price.
