Blame Canada

Seems like Sam Page broke federal law, eh.

The AP, Springfield News Leader and KY-3 are all reporting today that Page took $10,000 from a Canadian firm that just happens to be in the medical equipment business and just happened to be promoted by Page during his taxpayer-paid time in Jefferson City.

The problem is that it is illegal for federal, state and local candidates to take money from foreign nationals, including companies like Waverly Glen of  Vaughan, Ontario, Canada which gave so generously to Page on October 4, 2008.

Now, Page is claiming it was a simple clerical error but when a letter arrives clearly marked from Canada with a $10,000 check in it, how do you not know that, well, it’s from Canada and that such contributions are illegal? And this guy has a medical degree?

Word on the street is that federal complaints could be filed as early today, which also is being reported by bloodhound Dave Catanese at KY-3.

Not good for Page.

And then there’s the Missouri Ethics Commission. Even though state law bows to federal law on issues like this, you would think someone over at the Commission would have red flagged this Canadian contributipon and reported it to the feds.

Didn’t happen.

This is a sordid story that’s only going to get much worse for Page. I don’t think the people of Missouri are going to embrace someone who takes money from foreigners to try and influence an American campaign.

So, sorry Dr. Page. You can’t actually Blame Canada. You can only blame yourself.

Til Next Time

Dr. Page has consistently demonstrated a pattern of poor judgement in public office, and this latest chapter will likely be his last. Missouri voters demand a Lt. Governor who serves the people…not some foreign corporation.

This past legislative session, Rep. Sam Page sponsored legislation to use tax dollars to subsidize statewide purchasing of patient lifting equipment…the same type of lifting equipment as manufactured by the Waverly Glen company . Now this same foreign company months later gave a $10,000 illegal donation to Sam Page’s campaign. Does anyone else see the linkage or smell the stench?
