Zel Fischer – More of the Same

October 16th, 2008 by mopns · No Comments

“No one is surprised by this outcome, the whole process was designed to result in his appointment.” – James Harris, Executive Director, Better Courts for Missouri

Yesterday, Governor Matt Blunt appointed Judge Zel Fischer to the Missouri Supreme Court, replacing Judge Stephen Limbaugh. Once again, we are reminded of how flawed the Missouri Plan really is. After reviewing the judicial records and application of Judge Fischer, it is obvious that more qualified applicants were not nominated, leading us to believe that political favoritism and strong bonds to MATA were the qualifications that propelled Judge Fischer to his newly secured position.

Judge Fischer may have won a seat on the Court, but Missourians lost their voice to special interests in the process. As Gov. Blunt stated yesterday to KY3 News regarding his opposition to Greene County Question 1, “I think people benefit…when they’re able to elect their own officials, and I don’t think that Greene County should give up their right to elect their judges, so, I’m opposed.”

Openness and accountability are the foundations of the Missouri Plan. Until we can bring about reform, the Missouri Bar and MATA will control who sits on our state’s courts. The citizens of Missouri should be outraged and demand their voice back.
