AP Questions Sources of Funds McCaskill Using to Repay Campaign Debts

One thing we can certainly say about our new junior senator, she has not been shy when it comes to courting media attention.

The Missouri Political News Service has chronicled Senator McCaskill’s growing media prowess; be it an appearance on CNN’s Lou Dobbs during the immigration debate, or her feature write up in the New York Times, her communications director must be congratulated for getting her exposure. McCaskill has even been mentioned recently in the blogosphere as a potential vice presidential candidate next year.

As we all know, all good things must eventually come to an end. The AP’s Sam Hananel wrote a story today questioning the source of funds McCaskill is using to repay debts from her failed 2004 gubernatorial campaign against Matt Blunt. Hananel reports that the senator has received over 25k from Anheuser-Busch and its affiliates – illegal under current campaign finance laws. According to the story though, the FEC ruled it is permissible to accept those donations, if the proceeds are used to retire old state campaign debts. A lobbyist for the liberal Ralph Nader founded organization Public Citizen had these comments regarding the contributions:

“The biggest source of concern here is the fact that now the senator is in Congress and is accepting campaign contributions from what is otherwise illegal sources under federal election law.” Read more…
